How can we be Effective Teachers?
|
|
When Mr Arun walked in on Saturday morning to have a brief session with the teachers none present knew exactly how effective he would be! However, within 5 minutes of his session he had the audience eating out of his hands!
The techniques used were so simple and clear that the instant result was amazing to say the least.
The fact that less than 1% of the brain is currently being used and the wonder of its potential if only put to more effective use was beautifully illustrated.
As teachers it became our moral responsibility to ensure that children are taught the right ways to stimulate both sides of the brain leading to everlasting learning and easy access of information stored in the cranium!
With the help of 2 or more short examples the teachers were taken through the process required to help students improve their cognitive skills.
The session proved to be a very useful one and an eye-opener in more ways than one about one's dormant potential that needs to be utilised to the maximum.

Power Point Presentations

|
When technology comes knocking on one's door, we need to throw the door wide open!!
With the existing Smart_Class technology available in the school, it becomes mandatory for the teachers to be equipped with the knowledge of handling technology at its best.
With the computer lab no longer being the domain of just the Computer Science teachers, all subject teachers were encouraged to prepare and present power point presentations on any topic of their choice.
The obvious joy in being able to create and see instant results was evident in the eyes of the group that had gathered to present their presentations! Taking pride, the groups came forward to showcase their creation. Some were overjoyed at their new found knoweldge, others wanted more time to make a better presentation while almost everyone agreed that this was indeed something that they would be delving deeper into to get better and better at!

|
|
The PSBB Millennium School
Gerugambakkam - Chennai
Inauguration of the Phase II Block at Gerugambakkam on Monday, 24th May 25, 2010
After a feverish one-month of hectic work, leaving no stone unturned and working 24x7, the team of builders, painters, stonecutters and layers, landscapers, carpenters, vendors, manager, site engineers and electricians managed the impossible - completion of Phase II Block ready for inauguration on a balmy May morning.
The PSBB Millennium School Campus at Gerugambakkam is truly a one of a kind campus in its structure, build and size. Covering 1.20 lakh sq.ft of built in area, the building houses classes 1 to 10 with extra rooms to carry out activities of every kind be it those of the English Lab, the Math Lab, the Science Labs or Social Science lab, Dance, Music or Yoga.
With more than 300 odd labourers toiling and sweating through the hot summer, the mission impossible to complete the work between April 24th and May 24th was taken up with a vengeance and completed. The end result of the sweat and toil was sweet success on the 24th of May with the inauguration of Phase II Block
The morning began with the chanting of the mantra as the dedicated team of priests performed the Sudharshana Homam. Mr. Sharad Agarwal, Trustee LLF and President Schools and Mr. YG Rajendraa, Executive Management Trustee PSBB Group of Schools and Bala Bhavan Education Trust took sankalpam and prayed for the success and well being of the School and its inmates.

The other senior staff members rumbled into the courtyard in the School bus only to give out a gasp on seeing the transformation of the campus in one month! They decided to take a look at the campus and went about taking the new teachers with them.
The Staff members stopped to admire and appreciate the landscape, the aquarium at the front reception, the size of the classrooms, the finish in the labs, the enormity of the campus, the paintings on the walls. Ooh’s and aah’s could be heard in the passing and the smiles and beaming faces filled with pride was contagious and delightful for any witnessing passerby!
Other invitees who dropped in to congratulate and wish the School all the best couldn’t help but compliment the school for the way it had turned out to be! Invitees were taken round the campus in small groups showcasing the effort that had resulted in a state-of-the-art campus.
Appreciation for the planning and execution of the same was given to the engineers and the contractors. The fact that minute details with regard to the necessities of the children had been taken into account was commended.
Dr Mrs YG Parthasarathy, Padmashri Awardee, and Dean and Director of the PSBB Group of Schools arrived on the dot for the inauguration at 10:00am along with Mrs Sheela Rajendra, Vice Principal and Correspondent, PSBB Group of Schools.

This was followed by the traditional lighting of the lamp by Mrs. Y G Parthasarathy, Gen Kapur, Brig Vikram Singh, Mr Sharad Agarwal, Mr Ramanujam (the Contractor for the construction and Proprietor of Ramcons) and Mrs Sheela Rajendra and Mrs Sita Umamaheswaran.
Thereon, the congregation moved to the Homam seeking blessing of the Almighty. Prayers rendered and blessing sought, the visitors moved on to the Seminar Hall where the teachers from the GST, OMR and Gerugambakkam branches had assembled.
Dr Mrs Y G Parthasarathy addressed the gathering and told the teachers that they were indeed the proud recipients of the wonderful campus they were associated with. She reminded them of the importance of AIR – Accountability, Integrity and Responsibility and said that every individual was responsible for the standard of the school and the academic excellence therein. She encouraged the newly recruited Staff members to take the help of the seniors and their co-teachers who were already familiar with the PSBB Methodology. She told them that despite the fact that they may have come from other schools and other boards, they would soon be able to adapt and adopt the PSBB methodology as part of their teaching process. She also told them that they had very approachable Heads who could be consulted for any doubts they may have. She reiterated that as teachers we were morally responsible for the children under our care.
Mrs. Bhavani Baskar, one of the senior most teachers in the school, was announced to be the Asst Vice Principal on this occasion.
Commenting on the Campus Mrs. YGP said in very simple terms that the campus took her breath away! She wished all the teachers and the heads the very best and success in all their endeavours.
Mementos were given in appreciation to the dignitaries and all the people who had put in their time and effort to make the campus what it was.
A traditional lunch was awaiting the gathering and the people were invited to partake of the same. All the helpers, the workers and every person who had anything to do with the building were also served lunch on the joyous occasion.
The crowd melted away in the afternoon sun with their take away bag, also taking back with them memories of a morning well spent, looking forward to an academic year in a campus that was clearly a case of neighbour’s envy, owners pride!!
We are thankful to Mr. Shantanu Praksh and the Management for providing us with such a wonderful campus. It only makes us renew our pledge to give our best for the institution and the students.

School students from Chennai and Bangalore interact with NASA experts on Video Conference.
2008 marked NASA's (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) 50th year and as part of its golden anniversary celebrations, NASA connected with school students around the globe in an interactive distance learning session via Video Conferencing. Twenty schools—ten from the United States and ten from other countries—were chosen to participate in the live interactive distance learning programme and virtual birthday celebrations that were held on 13th November, 2008.
Two schools from India—the PSBB Millennium School, Chennai and Millennium School, Bangalore—participated in the live Video Conference from a Reliance World in their respective cities. Around 30 students of PSBB Millennium School, Chennai assembled at the Reliance World in Annasalai, Chennai and 20 of their counterparts gathered at the Reliance World located in J.P. Nagar, Bangalore.
Both the Reliance World locations were then connected to the Kennedy Space Center, USA. The live interactive session began with a welcome introduction by a NASA engineer and a scientist and a brief presentation on NASA's Distance Learning Network followed by a video clip about NASA @ 50 from Discovery Education Channel.
This was followed by a Q&A session with the NASA engineer and scientist. The students asked questions on topics ranging from NASA’s thoughts on India's space mission—Chandrayaan-1 to global warming and to what it takes to be a NASA astronaut and the NASA experts were more than happy to feed their curiosity.
The schools were then asked to wish NASA a Happy Birthday in their own unique style/tradition. PSBB Millennium School students sang the Happy Birthday song in eight different Indian languages and cut a cake. Millennium School students recited poems and presented NASA with a birthday card.
The session concluded with a presentation of the NASA Portal & Discovery's NASA @ 50 website resources.
For the students who participated in the live distance learning programme with NASA, it was a red letter day, fond memories of which would be etched in their minds forever.

On that special night we, the students of PSBB Millennium School, were taken through time and space to the world of NASA. We were enthralled upon meeting people who actually worked at NASA and we didn’t even notice time fly as they told us about their experiences and how we could one day join NASA too. At the end of it we just had one thing to say: Sometimes, dreams do come true.

Costume shops call the shots
PHARAOHS, CHANDRAYAANS, FLOWERS DOT FANCY DRESS RUNWAYS
Nandini Sivakumar CHENNAI
CHACHA NEHRU’S birthday celebrations have a pride of place in schools. As educational institutions in the city line up cultural events and fancy dress competitions for the D-day, it is costume rental shops that are making a killing. Charging upwards of a couple of hundred rupees a day per outfit, these outlets are calling the shots, even as demand patterns change.
Forget the usual leaders and historical figures, parents and schools are now looking for “different” stuff. Characters like Egyptian pharaohs and even the recently-launched Chandrayaan are finding a lot of takers.
PSBB Millenium School lined up competitions for all classes starting November 3. “There were fancy dress competitions with each standard having a different theme, raging from musical instruments and international costumes to items students would carry in their school bag. But we strictly forbade children to hire clothes and encouraged them to come in home-made costumes,” said Maths teacher and the School Cultural co-ordinator Mrs K Sivakamasundari.
A lot more competitions and a ramp walk for senior students, followed by programmes by teachers are lined up for the D- day, PSBB Millennium School Principal Sita Umamaheshwaran told ET. nandini.sivakumar@timesgroup.com

Promoted by education entrepreneur Shantanu Prakash and the legendary Dr. Y.G. Parthasarathy, this K-XII school, which blends latest ICT with Indian values and culture, has wowed the port city
Sited in the heart of the port city of Chennai (pop. 4.1 million), but insulated from the noise and bustle of the busy metropolis, the recently promoted CBSE-affiliated PSBB Millennium School (estb.2005) has already set new paradigms for globally benchmarked, culturally rooted education at affordable prices. Promoted by the Learning Leadership Foundation (a not-for-profit trust constituted by the Delhi-based Educomp Solutions Ltd (ESL), founded by education entrepreneur Shantanu Prakash in 1994) in collaboration with the Padma Seshadri Bala Bhavan (PSBB) group of schools headed by legendary educationist Dr. Y.G. Parthasarathy, PSBB Millennium is the fulfillment of the promoters’ vision to establish K-12 schools blending latest ICT (information communication technologies) with Indian values and culture, for which the PSBB group of schools has established an excellent reputation in Chennai.
Housed in a leased 1.5 acre site, the modest single storey circular school building with a playground at its centre and a Ganesha temple contiguous to the entrance, has been constructed at a project cost of Rs.6 crore. Unsurpr-isingly this unique initiative has caught the fancy of the city’s aspirational middle class, and PSBB Millennium which admitted its first batch of 684 pre-KG-class V students in June 2005, now boasts 2,000 students (upto class IX) supported by an 87-strong faculty on its muster rolls.
“Our institutional objective is to develop our students into global citizens with Indian values, and help them realise their true potential by shaping them into confident, responsible and balanced individuals with well-rounded personalities. Simultaneously we want to inculcate pride of our rich cultural heritage and value systems in them, so they mature into individuals with leadership qualities even as they strive for academic excellence,” says Sita Umamaheshwaran, an alumna of Madras and Annamalai universities who served in various capacities in the PSBB group of schools for a decade before she was appointed principal of PSBB Millennium last year.
True to its charter, ab initio PSBB Millennium has integrated ESL’s highly acclaimed Smart Class hardware and pedagogy into its fully wired classrooms connected to a resource centre, to enhance the learning experience of students. Smart Class is a technology-driven program that provides tools and content for interactive self-paced learning by students, and equips teachers with digital multi-media based instruction materials. At PSBB Millennium, teachers consult with the school’s resource coordinator (an ESL employee) and plan their lessons a week in advance. The visually rich content customised to the needs of students is streamed into classrooms via interactive white digi boards that serve both as black boards and screen projectors. “The audio-visual appeal of the ready-made modules for different subjects enables students to understand and retain abstract concepts,” says Umamaheshwaran.
Another distinguishing feature of the teaching-learning pedagogy employed at PSBB Millennium is the use of ESL’s O3 (one-on-one) Class Mate Personal Computer (CMPC) by students of classes III-IX, who learn interactively via the laptop with the class teacher. The use of CMPCs saves teachers’ time, encourages children to design their own presentations, access lesson files transferred to their laptops by teachers and also complete homework stored in their laptops.
Yet the unique selling proposition of PSBB Millennium which has wowed the upwardly mobile in Chennai is the school’s infrastructure. It boasts 54 classrooms, an impressive library-cum-reading room with 6,000 volumes and over a dozen journal subscriptions in addition to a sizeable collection of animated movies. Moreover it offers discrete science and English language labs to encourage activity-based self learning. Sports and games are also accorded considerable importance despite the small-size high school playground, with nets facilities for aspiring cricketers and a basket ball court. Also on offer is specialised coaching by professionals for football, basketball, cricket, yoga, karate, table tennis, aerobics and chess.
High quality infrastructure apart, PSBB Millennium incorporates the umbrella group’s tradition of dispensing value-based education to students. Therefore art and crafts, music and dance, drama, quiz, cultural academy classes, Bhagavad Gita recitation, shlokas, study of the Vedas, yoga and festival celebrations are part of the school curriculum with students encouraged to attend lectures and seminars of spiritual leaders to enrich thought, action and behaviour.
Inevitably, given the Educomp connection, ICT (instructional communication technologies) — which ESL has developed and markets to almost 10,000 private and government schools countrywide — pre-service and in-service teacher training is a continuous activity at the school. Training sessions utilising technology oriented tools and techniques are conducted for all new teachers at the beginning of the year, and a series of interactive workshops are held every Saturday to update teachers on new pedagogies.
With the school’s gestation period over, the PSBB Millennium management has drawn up ambitious expansion plans for the future. A new branch of the school is under construction on a 2.5 acre campus at the DLF Garden City on the Old Mahabalipuram Road. It will be ready next year when it will admit nursery and primary pupils. Moreover, with the school’s teachers and students having adopted ESL’s advanced technologies, a great teaching-learning leap forward is envisaged.
“From the next academic year, we plan to progress from intranet to internet, enabling children to access classroom lessons at home. Introducing digi-text books, computerising office administration and starting Girl Guides, Boy Scouts and NCC programmes is also on the cards. On the co-curricular education front, a Bharatiya Sanskriti cultural programme will familiarise our children with India’s cultural heritage, music, drama and dance forms, and provide students opportunities to showcase their talents. We believe that every PSBB Millennium student is potentially a leader and we plan to equip all our children with the skills, learning and confidence to excel,” says Umamaheshwaran.
Quite evidently in Chennai’s newest 21st century school, the search for excellence is serious business. | |
